BUDE CANAL 200 yearsOn the 23rd July 2019 it will be the 200th Anniversary of the commencement of the construction of the Bude Canal. The canal was built to take lime rich sand from Bude into the interior of North Cornwall and West Devon to improve the heavy soils. The breakwater at Bude made a safe haven and the sea lock gave access to the Canal for coastal trading vessels to load and unload their cargoes.
When completed it was in total 35½ miles of waterway with 6 inclined planes, 2 inland locks, plus the sea lock. The creation of the Canal brought investment, trading and much needed employment. In itself it was the catalyst that led eventually to the town that today we know as Bude. This anniversary is worthy of celebration and during 2019 BCHS has organised events to commemorate the anniversary.
